The children’s ward is always quite busy with a wide mix of cases. Sometimes the children are brought to us very late which is distressing. We are grateful for our surgical colleagues who operate on all ages from birth onwards providing a valuable service.
Our Paediatric Lead is Dr. Josephine Nantongo, Consultant Paediatrician who also co-ordinates HIV services in Kisiizi.
Sadly we still see quite a lot of children with malnutrition which makes them more vulnerable to a range of infections. We have some immunocompromised children due to HIV but hope that as the improved regimes of anti-retroviral drugs for pregnant women are adopted the numbers of infants infected by vertical transmission should fall dramatically.
The department has two Paediatric Interns rotating through for 3 month attachments.
